First C/Can Regional Forum exploring routes to sustainable finance solutions for high resources identified priorities in the LATAM cities
On 18-19 April 2018, C/Can held its first Latin American Regional Forum to explore sustainable financing solutions for cancer control in the region. The Forum was hosted by the Presidency of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in partnership with the Municipality of Montevideo.
More than 60 participants including government authorities, directors of national cancer institutes, health finance experts, economists from development banks, multilateral institutions, the private sector and academia were convened to provide expert feedback to C/Can’s first two Key Learning Cities – Asunción and Cali – on their priorities for sustainable investment in cancer care and treatment.
The Minister of Health and Minister of Finance of Uruguay shared their experience in financing NCD care and treatment and how their best practices can be transferred to C/Can city leaders to advance sustainable cancer financing in their cities and for the region as a whole. Additionally, a parallel meeting was held with the Directors of the National Cancer Institutes of Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay and the Latin American representative of the IAEA to begin developing collaborative activities and technical support for Asunción and Cali.
The forum was spearheaded by the C/Can City Health Financing Lab, a new C/Can initiative being developed to support cities in low- and middle-income countries to access sustainable financing solutions for their cancer care priorities.
Based on the feedback received and discussions held during the forum, city leaders from Asunción and Cali will continue refining their sustainable financing proposals and business models with the assistance of the C/Can City Health Financing Lab.
